Distorted Reality
Distorted Reality is a continuous phenomenon in the microtonal world of Ensemble SCALA. The music in this program varies enormously: from post minimal (Billy Alves), via uncompromisingly oriental (Giacinto Scelsi) to angular and straight (Joke Kegel). Add to this the glissandos and spectral sounds in Danny de Graan's new work 'Distorted Reality', on which the title of the concert is based. What connects all these works are the microscopic intervals, far away from the familiar classical keys. Every melody and every harmony transforms under the pressure of the prism of microtonality into a gossamer rainbow of color and sound that invites a new listening attitude.
The Ensemble SCALA was created on the initiative of the Huygens-Fokker Foundation, which also owns the 31-tone organ in the Small Hall. The microtonal organ is part of the ensemble, which also consists of flute, clarinet, viola, 31-tone guitar, percussion and keyboards, including the Carrillo piano in mysteriously resonant 96-tone tuning.
