Tribute to Lemkes & Vos
Joseph Puglia and Emmy Storms, two top violinists, give a historical concert with work for violin duo and accompaniment, composed in the meantone tuning and the 31-tone tuning. With this they apply a tribute to the famous Dutch violin duo Bouw Lemkes (1924-2016) and Jeanne Vos († 2000). Stimulated by their interest in physics, the couple Vos and Lemkes have developed a refined approach to tuning principles as a violin duo since 1959 that has attracted a great deal of national and international attention. Impressive performances of the first sonata for two violins by Henk Badings aroused both the interest of professor Adriaan Fokker and that of the international concert circuit, which led to a long-term collaboration between the duo, Badings and Fokker. In addition to a concert for two violins and orchestra, Henk Badings composed a total of no fewer than four of the five sonatas for violin duo in the 31-tone system. Hans Kox also dedicated a work to them in 1968, namely the 'Serenade' for two violins in the 31-tone system. But also the Australian composer Bill Coates, who already owned an archiphone (a electronic 31-tone organ) in the 1970s and last but not least the Dutchman Anton de Beer, the former organist of the Fokker organ. By performing works from the repertoire of this illustrious pair, the new violin duo Puglia & Storms will certainly follow in their footsteps. Yet there are not only violin duos on the program. At the request of Joseph Puglia, who already performed microtonal works by Hans Kox during the Fokker organ series of 2010, a reprise of the monumental 'Synaesthesia Suite' by Kate Moore, which was specially composed for him in 2014, is also sounding. In all duos Puglia is accompanied by the excellent violinist Emmy Storms, the brand new winner of the Grachtenfestival Prize 2019.
