February 7, 2016 | Johannes Keller, Fokker organ & Eva Saladin, violin

Concert Fokker organ | 2016-02-07, 11.00 hours | Small Hall - Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam

Enchanting microtones in the 16th & 17th century

Johannes Keller is a harpsichordist and specialist in rare meantone music with more than the usual 12 tones per octave. At the invitation of the Huygens-Fokker Foundation he will come from Basel to Amsterdam to give a unique concert where he will play the 31-tone organ as well as his own 'chromatic-enharmonic' harpsichord. The program includes several composers such as Georg Muffat, Ascanio Mayone and Nicola Vicentino, who took effort in the 16th and 17th century in extending the meantone temperament in order to be able to modulate into remote keys which were out of reach in the common tuning. Sporadically, the use of these 'new' tones resulted in experiments which gave rise to strange harmonic progressions. A special feature of this concert is that the famous German composer and cellist Johannes Caspar Walter will compose a new work for violin and 31-tone organ. In several works Johannes Keller will be accompanied by violinist Eva Saladin.
